This is the time to start preparing for your move - organization is key to having a successful move. Check with the movers to make sure that your move is on their schedule Decide which of your possessions you will be moving and what you want to get rid of. You can donate these items to a charity or have a garage sale to lighten the load. You should do this at least two weeks before the move. You may want to collaborate with neighbors to have a larger garage sale - be sure to advertise it! Start assembling the packing and moving supplies you’ll need. You can buy boxes from local moving supply shops or from moving companies. Any boxes you buy from a moving company or moving supply store will be made specifically for moving and will do a good job of protecting your possessions. Consider the floor plan and start deciding where the furniture will go once it arrives - this will save you a lot of time later on. Get acquainted with your new city or new neighborhood. You can get information from the Chamber of Commerce on community features such as parks, schools and community organizations. You should also make your travel arrangements at this time. Make sure to build in some flexibility to your plans in case of delays. Keep all of your moving related receipts; many of these expenses are tax deductible. You can get an IRS change of address form (Form 8822) as well by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS website at www.irs.gov website. You can download and print this form, as well as Form 3903, for moving-related deductions. Make sure all of your real estate or rental paperwork is in order for your new and old homes. Transfer your insurance to your new address.
