Make things easier for yourself and the movers by being there when the movers show up. If this is not possible, get someone to be there to help the movers; let the moving company know that someone will be there and tell them who this person is. They may have to sign documents and make decisions for you, so designate someone you trust for this. Give the moving company any phone numbers they’ll need to reach you while your possessions are being shipped. You should also have the name, address and phone number of the moving companies’ agent on the destination end handy. Give the driver easy to follow directions to your new location. When the movers arrive, look over all of the paperwork and go along with the driver when they inspect the cargo. There will be tags with ID numbers for your furniture, which you should make sure match up with the numbers and listings on the manifest. Stay at home until everything is packed and loaded. Before the truck leaves, make sure to check the inventory and make notes about the condition of your items if necessary - you may want to take pictures. Make sure that you are reachable by phone.. Do as much cleaning as possible before the moving van gets there. Make sure nothing is left in closets or other places around the home. At least 24 hours before the arrival time, the driver or moving company agent will call - this gives you time to get ready to unload. If you cannot be reached, then you need to contact the agent. Figure out where you want your furniture and appliances to go before the movers arrive - be there during unloading to answer any questions. If you can’t be there during unloading, then have someone there for you to accept the delivery and pay charges - let the moving company know who this will be. Again, make sure that they are someone you trust, since they will be signing documents for you. Signing the inventory sheet acknowledges the receipt of all of your items. Any loss or damage should be noted and reported to the moving company immediately. Have your reference number handy. Get a baby sitter for your children during the loading and unloading process. Keep your pets out of the way of during loading and unloading. If you want to have the movers unpack for you, you’ll have to order this in advance; however, limited unpacking and removal can be requested on the day of the move. Don’t use your other electronic devices and appliances for 24 hours after delivery to prevent possible damage. Allow them to adjust to room temperature first. Payment will be required upon delivery. This can be in cash, money order, traveler’s checks or cashier’s checks - personal checks are not accepted. Unless other arrangements were made in advance you are required by federal regulation to pay upon delivery for interstate moves.
